The Right Image Size for Instagram Shop Products

Instagram is a square-first platform, and its Shop is no exception. Product catalog images display in a square (1:1) frame, and the recommended size is 1080×1080 pixels. Get this right and your products look crisp and consistent in the shop grid; get it wrong and Instagram crops or softens your images. Here 's how to size them properly with QuickWand's free image compressor and resizer.

How to size a product photo for Instagram Shop

  1. First, crop the photo to a square (1:1) in your phone or photo app, centering the product. This step matters — see the honest note below.
  2. Open the Image Compressor and drop the square photo in.
  3. Choose Resize → Max size and enter 1080. Because the image is already square, both sides become 1080, giving you a clean 1080×1080.
  4. Keep Quality high (around 90%) and check the live size estimate. A modest file size compresses less when Instagram re-encodes it.
  5. Click Download and add the image to your Meta Commerce catalog.

The honest note on getting a true square

QuickWand resizes proportionallyand does not crop your image into a square. If you feed it a rectangular photo and set max size to 1080, you'll get something like 1080×810 — not 1080×1080. So the crop-to-square step has to happen first. Once the photo is genuinely 1:1, setting max size to 1080 lands it on exactly 1080×1080 because both sides are equal. The tool will never stretch or distort your product to force a square.

Instagram Shop and Meta catalog specs

  • Recommended product size: 1080×1080 pixels, square 1:1.
  • Meta Commerce minimum: 500×500 pixels.
  • Meta Commerce recommended: 1024×1024 pixels or larger.
  • Best practice: a clean background, the full product in frame, no text overlays, watermarks, or promo codes.

Because Instagram Shop catalogs are managed through Meta Commerce Manager, the same image works across both your Instagram and Facebook shops. Aim for 1080×1080 — it comfortably exceeds Meta's 1024px recommendation and is the native Instagram square size.

If your product shots came off an iPhone as HEIC files, convert them with the HEIC to JPG converter first. For a complete comparison of sizes across Amazon, Etsy, eBay, and more, see our product image dimensions guide.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Instagram Shop product images be?
The standard and recommended size is 1080×1080 pixels, a square 1:1 ratio. Instagram Shop catalogs run through Meta Commerce, which requires a minimum of 500×500 pixels and recommends 1024×1024 or larger. Uploading at exactly 1080px square gives the sharpest result.
Do Instagram Shop images have to be square?
Product images display in a square (1:1) format across Instagram and Meta shops, so square is strongly recommended. QuickWand resizes proportionally and doesn't crop to a square, so crop your photo to 1:1 first, then set the max size to 1080 to land on exactly 1080×1080.
How do I keep the file small enough?
Meta allows large files, but smaller uploads compress less aggressively and look cleaner. After resizing to 1080, lower the Quality slider in QuickWand while watching the live size estimate — keeping the file modest (under a few MB) helps preserve sharpness.
Are my product photos uploaded to a server?
No. Resizing and compression run entirely in your browser. Your photos never leave your device.
