Frequently asked questions
- Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
- No. The unlock operation runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device.
- What types of PDF protection can this tool remove?
- It removes owner-password protection — the kind that restricts printing, copying, or editing even though the PDF opens without a password. It cannot remove user-password (open-password) encryption that requires a password just to view the file.
- What if the tool says it couldn't unlock my PDF?
- That means the PDF uses a strong user (open) password that browser-based tools cannot decrypt. The tool will tell you this clearly rather than pretending to succeed. Your only option is to open the file in a desktop application like Adobe Acrobat or macOS Preview using the correct password, then export it without a password.
- Should I enter a password if I don't know one?
- Leave the password field blank. It is only useful if you know the owner password and want to try it. If the PDF opens normally but has editing or printing disabled, no password is needed.
- Is it legal to unlock a PDF?
- Only unlock PDFs you own or have permission to modify. Removing restrictions from documents you don't own may violate the creator's rights or your organization's policies.
