Etsy's 2000px Image Size: How to Get It Right

Etsy is unusual among marketplaces: it recommends a generous 2000 pixels on the shortest side so its hover-to-zoom feature works, yet it also warns that files over 1 MBmay not finish uploading on slower connections. So the trick is to be big in dimensions but small in file size. Here 's how to nail both with QuickWand's free image compressor and resizer.

How to size a photo for Etsy

  1. Open the Image Compressor and drop your product photo in.
  2. Use Resize → Max size and enter 2000. This sets the longest side to 2000px and scales the rest proportionally — perfect if you don't need a strict square.
  3. For Etsy's ideal square look, crop the photo to a 1:1 square first, then set max size to 2000 so it lands on a clean 2000×2000.
  4. Now watch the live size estimate. If it's over 1 MB, lower the Quality slider (try 85%) until the estimate drops below 1 MB.
  5. Click Download and upload to your Etsy listing — it should now go up smoothly.

Why Etsy recommends 2000px

At 2000px on the shortest side, Etsy activates its zoom feature, so shoppers can inspect texture, stitching, and material up close — a big deal for handmade and vintage items where detail sells. A 2000×2000 square also displays consistently across search results, category grids, and the listing page without awkward cropping. Etsy supports JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG, and HEIC, with a working resolution of 72 PPI.

The 1 MB caution matters because a freshly resized 2000×2000 JPG at full quality can easily exceed 1 MB. That's exactly why combining resize with a quality reduction is the winning move — you keep the large dimensions Etsy wants while staying under the size that makes uploads stall.

The honest note on squares

QuickWand's resize is proportional: Max size fits the longest side to your target without cropping. A 3000×2400 photo set to max size 2000 becomes 2000×1600, not 2000×2000. To get a perfect square, the image must already be square — crop it 1:1 in your phone or photo app first, then resize to 2000. Don't expect the tool to invent a square by stretching; it won't distort your product.

  • First photo: at least 635px wide and tall, but aim for the full 2000px.
  • Aspect ratio: square (1:1) is ideal on Etsy.
  • File size: keep under 1 MB so uploads complete.

If your photos are iPhone HEIC files, Etsy does accept HEIC, but for maximum compatibility you can convert them with the HEIC to JPG converter first. For the full cross-platform picture, see our product image dimensions guide.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Etsy listing photos be?
Etsy recommends listing photos be at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side, and a square 2000×2000 is the ideal because square images display consistently everywhere. Your first photo should be at least 635 pixels to avoid ranking lower in search.
Why do my Etsy uploads fail or stall?
Etsy notes that images larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on slower connections. The fix is to compress the file under 1 MB after resizing — lower the Quality slider in QuickWand while watching the live size estimate until it drops below 1 MB.
Does QuickWand crop my photo into a 2000×2000 square?
No. The Resize → Max size option scales proportionally to fit a maximum dimension; it does not crop to a square. For a true 2000×2000, crop your photo square first, then set the max size to 2000 so both equal sides land on exactly 2000.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Your listing photos stay on your device.
