How to Rotate a Sideways or Upside-Down PDF (Free)

You scan a document or snap a few pages with your phone, open the resulting PDF, and the whole thing is lying on its side — or worse, completely upside down. You have to tilt your head (or your laptop) just to read it. Nothing is actually wrong with the content; the pages are simply rotated the wrong way.

The fix takes a few seconds and doesn't need any installed software. Here is exactly how.

How to rotate a sideways or upside-down PDF

QuickWand's free Rotate PDF tool runs entirely inside your browser, so your document never leaves your computer.

  1. Open the Rotate PDF tool.
  2. Drag your PDF into the drop zone, or click it to browse for the file.
  3. Rotate the pages in 90° steps until they sit the right way up. A sideways page usually needs one turn; an upside-down page needs two (180°). You can rotate every page at once, or pick just the pages that came in crooked.
  4. Download the corrected PDF. The rotation is baked in, so it opens upright everywhere — on your phone, in email, and when printed.

Why scans and phone captures come in rotated

Every PDF page carries a Rotatevalue — an instruction that tells viewers how many degrees to turn the page before displaying it. Scanners and phone-scanning apps set this value based on how the page was physically fed or how your phone was held.

So if you fed a landscape page into a portrait scanner, or your phone tilted while it captured the page, the app records that orientation and writes it into the PDF. The pixels are perfectly fine — the page is just flagged to display rotated. Turning it back with the tool above writes the correct orientation so the page finally sits upright.

What about mixed-orientation documents?

Long scans often have a few pages that landed sideways while the rest are fine — a wide table or a receipt slipped in the wrong way. Because you can rotate individual pages, you fix only the offenders and leave everything else untouched.

If the pages are also out of order

Sometimes a scan is rotated and jumbled. Once the pages are facing the right way, use the Organize PDF tool to drag them into the correct sequence and delete any blank separator pages your scanner added. Between rotating and reordering, you can turn a messy scan into a clean, readable document in under a minute.

Rotate the pages, download, and your sideways or upside-down PDF reads properly on every device.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my scanned PDF open sideways?
Scanners and phone-scanning apps record the orientation the page was fed or captured in. If you fed a page in landscape, or your phone was held at an angle, the resulting PDF inherits that rotation. The text is fine — the whole page is just turned the wrong way, and you need to rotate it back.
How do I rotate just one page instead of the whole PDF?
Open QuickWand's Rotate PDF tool, drop in your file, and you can rotate every page at once or pick individual pages to turn. That is useful when most of the document is upright but a few scanned pages came in sideways.
Will rotating a PDF reduce its quality?
No. Rotating only changes the page orientation flag and re-lays the content at 90, 180, or 270 degrees. It does not re-compress the text or images, so the file stays exactly as sharp as the original.
Is the rotate PDF tool free and private?
Yes. QuickWand's Rotate PDF tool is free with no sign-up and no watermark, and it runs entirely in your browser, so your document is never uploaded to a server.
