Etsy Won't Accept Your PNG? Convert It to JPG

You're adding photos to an Etsy listing, you drag in your PNG, and the upload spinner just keeps spinning — or it goes through but the crisp transparent background you designed turns into a plain white box. Either way, Etsy and your PNG aren't getting along. The reliable fix is to convert the file to JPG before you upload.

How to convert your PNG to JPG for Etsy

QuickWand's free PNG to JPG converter does this right in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server.

  1. Open the PNG to JPG converter.
  2. Drag your .png listing photos into the drop zone (or click to browse). Add as many as you like at once.
  3. Choose JPG as the output format and set quality around 85%— that keeps photos looking great while getting the file comfortably under Etsy's recommended 1 MB.
  4. Hit Convert and download each photo, or click Download all (.zip) for the whole batch.

Why Etsy struggles with PNGs

Etsy's image guidelines list .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg, and .heic as accepted formats, but with two important catches: animated GIFs aren't allowed, and transparent PNGs aren't supported. On top of that, Etsy warns that images larger than about 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on a slower connection — and PNG photos are routinely several megabytes. So a PNG can fail Etsy on two fronts at once: size and transparency.

JPG sidesteps both problems. It compresses photographs dramatically, so a 4 MB PNG often becomes a 300–600 KB JPG with no visible difference, and it has no transparency to flatten.

A note on transparency

When you convert a transparent PNG to JPG, JPG cannot store the transparent pixels, so those areas are filled with a solid background instead of staying see-through. For an Etsy product photo this is usually what you want anyway — a clean, flat background. Just know that the transparency is gone for good in the JPG, so if you also use that cut-out image in a design or a digital download, keep your original PNG.

Still too big, or got the wrong format?

If a converted JPG is still over 1 MB, the free image compressor will bring it down further with a live size estimate. And if you ever download a mockup or supplier photo that saves as a .webp file Etsy won't take, the WebP to JPG converter converts those just as easily.

Frequently asked questions

What image formats does Etsy accept?
Etsy accepts .jpg, .gif, .png, .svg, and .heic files. Important caveats: animated GIFs are not supported, and transparent PNGs are not supported — Etsy will flatten the transparency. The maximum file size is 10 MB, but Etsy warns that files over about 1 MB may not finish uploading on slower connections.
Why won't my PNG finish uploading to Etsy?
The most common reason is file size. A high-resolution photo saved as PNG is often several megabytes, and Etsy says images larger than about 1 MB may stall, especially on slower internet. Converting to JPG typically cuts the size by 70% or more, so the upload completes.
Why did my transparent background turn white on Etsy?
Etsy does not support transparency in PNGs, so it flattens the image and fills transparent areas with a background. If you control the background, it's cleaner to convert to JPG yourself and choose how it looks rather than letting the upload decide.
Is QuickWand's converter free?
Yes — free, no sign-up, no watermark. Conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your shop photos never leave your device.
