Discord Profile Picture Size: How to Make a Crisp PFP

Discord shows your avatar small and masks it into a circle, so a non-square image or an off-center subject gets awkwardly cropped. Crop to a centered square and upload it large for a clean PFP.

The correct Discord PFP size

  • Display size: 128 × 128 pixels (circular crop)
  • Recommended upload: 512 × 512 pixels (square)
  • Shape: must be square; shown as a circle

Uploading at 512×512 means your avatar stays crisp anywhere Discord shows it larger (profile popouts, etc.).

How to crop a square PFP

  1. Open the crop tool.
  2. Drop in your image.
  3. Set a 1:1 (square) ratio and center your subject.
  4. Download — processed in your browser, never uploaded.

Keep it inside the circle

Because Discord masks the image to a circle, the four corners are hidden. Keep your face, logo, or character centered with margin around it so the circular crop doesn't clip anything.

Tips

  • Square server icons too: the same approach works for the 512×512 server icon.
  • Small source? Upscale it before cropping so the PFP isn't pixelated.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a Discord profile picture be?
Discord displays avatars at 128 × 128 pixels and crops them to a circle, but you should upload a square image at 512 × 512 so it stays sharp when shown larger. The image must be square or it will be cropped.
Why is my Discord PFP cut off?
Discord masks avatars into a circle, so the corners of a square image are hidden. Keep your subject centered, away from the corners, so the circular crop doesn't cut anything important.
What about the server icon size?
Server icons are also square — 512 × 512 is recommended — and are shown as a rounded square. The same 'crop to square, keep it centered' advice applies.
