Page-numbering conventions worth knowing
A few norms make a numbered document look professional:
- Don't number the cover. Title pages are usually left unnumbered. Start the count on the first content page so the numbering matches what readers actually flip to.
- Pick a position and keep it.Bottom-center reads as neutral and formal; bottom-right is handy for thumbing through a printed stack. Whatever you choose, apply it to the whole document so it's consistent.
- Contracts benefit most.Numbered pages let parties reference “page 7, clause 3” precisely and make it obvious if a page is missing from a signed copy — a small detail that prevents real disputes.
For theses and dissertations, check your institution's style guide: many require numbering to begin on the first page of the introduction, with front matter either unnumbered or in lowercase Roman numerals. Setting the starting number lets you match whatever the guide asks for.
Number after you assemble, not before
Add page numbers as the laststep, once the document is fully assembled and in final order. If you number first and then add or reorder pages, the numbers won't line up. So merge and arrange everything first, then number.
